Bit*Jane has never taken a journalism, business, accounting, engineering, marketing, CIS or coding class – and not even a math class beyond high school – proving with her experiment that anyone can learn to understand the concepts and usage, create a self-sustaining web site, blog or business, and generate some SWAG and even wealth with Bitcoin.
I am sure you will appreciate her Bitcoin Experiment...
In the five years since the first Bitcoin block was mined, thousands of people around the world have won and lost fortunes both big and small by
speculating on the digital crypto-currency. The happiest people in Bitcoin are not necessarily the ones who have amassed a huge fortune with artful
and lucky moves. The ฿it(©oin) Change Club postulates that the happiest people in Bitcoin are those who enjoy the crypto experiment for its own
sake – for the incredible technological innovations, for the vast personal and global implications, and for the totally wild ride – and our founder
Bit*Jane is one of them.
In the summer of 2013, after enduring a series of 3 lay-offs in 3 years from teaching in DC public schools and DC public special education centers
that were closed – and sold to private corporations – she became interested in trying a new way of living, teaching, earning income, spending
money and saving for retirement.
Bit*Jane bought her first Bitcoin and launched an experiment.
She set off to build an educational, ad-free Bitcoin website, with a blog, a store and free classified listings for the Bitcoin community, using only
Bitcoin. Bit*Jane’s timing was exquisite…and it was sheer beginner’s luck. She met a “WordPress whiz,” network administrator,
Dr. Paul Coates, who built and maintains the web site exclusively for Bitcoin.
The ฿it(©oin) Change Club launched with a festive all-Bitcoin Halloween party on October 31, and art teacher Jane morphed into self-styled Bitcoin
Super-Hero, Bit*Jane.
Her favorite purchase, however, was a “Bitcoin Bomber” hoodie from partners Bitcoin Not Bombs, which crowd-funds a 2nd free hoodie for a
homeless person with every Bitcoin purchase. Partnering with Bitcoin Black Friday also brought a crowd of customers to her experimental Serious
Change Store where PayPal is accepted, but purchases and shipping are always 25% off with payment in Bitcoin.
Bit*Jane likes to say, “That’s what we call serious change,” hoping that the huge discount will encourage more Bitcoin transactions.
The value of Bitcoin skyrocketed until late 2013. At publishing, the market value of Bitcoin has dropped to around $525 at Coinbase, which has
unnerved late speculators, but not Bit*Jane, who has “loved the wild ride!”
Bit*Jane has never tried or expected to earn a living with The ฿it(©oin) Change Club; her goal is for the site to be self-sustaining.
She accepts no paid advertising and only sells items for twenty dollars or less, just to offset expenses, to sustain the experiment, to keep Bitcoin
moving – and also “to collect all this cool BTC SWAG.”
Bit*Jane has never taken a journalism, business, accounting, engineering, marketing, CIS or coding class – and not even a math class beyond high
school – proving with her experiment that anyone can learn to understand the concepts and usage, create a self-sustaining web site, blog or
business, and generate some SWAG and even wealth with Bitcoin.
Bit*Jane admits that learning to use Bitcoin has improved her math skills “exponentially.”
Bit*Jane is a former Teacher of the Year with a master’s degree and teaching certificates in Art, Early Childhood and Special Education. She plans to
return to teaching and still hopes to earn her doctorate.
Will her next experiment be to earn her Ph.D. using only Bitcoin?
“Quite possibly,” she replied.
‘But I might have to live to be 100 years old.’
